On August 2, 2023, the National Dairy Authority (NDA) Regional Dairy Farmers Livelihood Center Northern Mindanao conducted a ceremonial turnover of animals to the Tigbao Cattle Dairy Farmers Association in Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur. This event marked a significant step towards boosting local dairy production in the region.

The initiative was made possible through the PL480 project, a US federal law aimed at providing technical assistance to developing countries in agriculture, food production, and nutrition. Under this project, the NDA facilitated the provision of 31 heads of pregnant Holstein Jersey Dairy Cattle along with feed concentrate and molasses to the Tigbao Cattle Dairy Farmers Association amounting to Php 4,794,486.

These Holstein Jersey Dairy Cattle are expected to establish a thriving dairy milk production hub in the area. This strategic move is set to improve the livelihoods of the local farmers and contribute to the economic growth of Tigbao and its neighboring communities.

Moreover, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) also contributed to the initiative by providing the association with 24 milking cans, each with a 20-liter capacity.

The turnover event was graced by Hon. Eleazar C. Carcallas, mayor of Tigbao, who delivered an encouraging message to the farmers. Additionally, representatives of Governor Hon. Victor J. Yu and Hon. Jeyzel Victoria Yu, Congressman of the 2nd district of Zamboanga del Sur, expressed their wholehearted support for the initiative, affirming their commitment to fostering agricultural development in the region.

Furthermore, the Baclay Multi-purpose Cooperative (BMPC) pledged their commitment to buy raw milk from the Tigbao Cattle Dairy Farmers Association at competitive prices, offering Php 40 per liter pickup and Php 50 pesos if the milk will be delivered to their plant.

This partnership with BMPC provides a steady market opportunity for dairy farmers, ensuring a reliable and fair return for their hard work.

Joining BMPC in supporting this cause, several government agencies also pledged their assistance during the event. The Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 9, the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 9, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 9 all expressed their dedication to extending support and expertise to ensure the success and sustainability of the dairy production efforts.
