REGIONAL FIELD SERVICES MENU

9. Animal Breeding Services

  1. Dairy Herd (Natural Heat)

Breeding services are provided by NDA and conducted by NDA field personnel and its Cooperative Dairy Technician (CDT) or accredited private practitioners of artificial insemination (AI).  As a policy, AI is the method of breeding for the dairy herd.  Bulls for natural mating will only be allowed for areas where AI is not feasible to conduct.

NDA provides frozen semen straws for free as part of the support NDA provides its assisted dairy farms.

  1. Breeding Services (Synchronized/ Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination)

Synchronization is used to schedule the mating of dairy animals.  In this way, farmers can plan their milk production ahead when milk is expected to be much needed.  Fixed time AI is a method in order to catch majority if not all of animals that come to heat after administration of hormones used for synchronization.  In this process, a double dose of prostaglandin is used in order to get standing heat of all animals dosed at the same time or closer to each other.

In future activities, synchronization methods will change given the availability of other synchronizing drugs that result in higher conception rates.

  1. Upgrading

This is a crossbreeding activity using non-dairy cattle and bred using frozen semen from dairy sires.  The process is meant to produce dairy animals from the greater cattle population with non-dairy breed.  It is a strategy to potentially increase the number of dairy animals.

The process is requested by a proponent, usually a local government that will provide the necessary logistical support.  The process is seen to produce dairy animals, encourage farmers to milk the product crossbreds, and initiate milk production in the municipality.
