Czech delegation visits PH for dairy value chain analysis and improvement

A delegation from Czech Republic headed by Dr. Blanka Krivankova, Project Manager of GEOtest, conducted a technical mission to the Philippines on July 9-12, 2018 in line with the approved National Dairy Authority (NDA) project under the Aid for Trade of the Czech Republic Development Cooperation entitled: Expert Assistance on In-Depth Analysis of the Supply Chain of the Philippine Dairy Industry.

Mabale, Administrator; Ms. Naomi K. Torreta, Deputy Administrator; Ms. Jacqueline H. Seguin, Manager, Administrative and Finance Department; Mr. Rene M. de Guzman, Manager, Corporate Planning & Management Services Department; and Dr. Jaime M. Lopez, Head, Technical Assistance Division.
The said project aims to provide assistance in analyzing and improving the local dairy value chain as well as facilitate knowledge sharing/transfer among farmers, processors, distributors, and government service providers to help them optimize the use of their inputs such as materials, money, machine, manpower and methods.
Members of the delegation included Dr. Daniel Falta, Vice-Dean for External Affairs, Faculty of Agri-Sciences, Mendel University in Brno; Dr. Ondřej Polák, Faculty of Agri-Sciences, Mendel University in Brno; Dr. Vít Mareček, Head of Production in Madeta; and Dr. Lubos Zabransky, Assistant Professor at University of South Bohemia.
The first day of the technical mission commenced with a courtesy call on NDA Administrator Marilyn B. Mabale followed by an introductory meeting with the officers and representatives from NDA, Dairy Confederation of the Philippines (DairyCon), University of the Philippines Los Baños – Dairy Training and Research Institute (UPLB-DTRI), Department of Agriculture- International Affairs Division (DA-IAD) and Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD).
The meeting tackled the specific details of the project and the current status of the Philippine dairy industry. To gain more insights into the actual market situation of local dairy products, the Czech experts, together with NDA representatives, visited some selected stalls at Market! Market!, Taguig City in the afternoon.
The mission also included a two-day field visit which allowed the Czech experts to assess the dairy production capacities, technological equipment, and working methods of local dairy farmers and in general, the situation of the whole value chain. During the wrap up session held on July 12, 2018, the Czech experts presented their major findings with corresponding recommendations as follows: improvement of feeding systems and feed and forage/silage storage systems; improvement of processing systems in milk processing plants; consistent adherence to good animal welfare and environmental protection practices; and continuous implementation of NDA’s milk feeding program.

The next phase of the project, which is a study tour to Czech Republic to be participated by selected Filipino dairy farmer representatives and stakeholders, will commence in September 2018.
