DA celebrates the Farmers and Fisherfolk Month

The Department of Agriculture (DA) spearheaded the nationwide observance of the Farmer and Fisherfolk Month held on May 25-29, 2015 at the DA Compound, Quezon City.

As the lead agency in Agriculture and Fisheries, the DA holds this event to pay tribute to the farmers and fisherfolk for their labours and toils to provide food to every Filipino table. Various agencies, bureaus, corporations as well as the DA-Regional Field Offices (RFOs) participated in the activity to express their appreciation of the the farmers and fisherfolk’s important role in the implementation of agriculture and fisheries programs.

The National Dairy Authority (NDA), together with one of its Dairy Multiplier Farm (DMF) partners, the Batangas Dairy Cooperative (BADACO), was among the participating agencies. NDA and BADACO showcased various dairy products like fresh milk, chocolate drinks and flavoured yogurt with the aim of increasing consumer awareness and preference for locally produced milk and milk products.

Farmers from various provinces also put up their booths and participated in the exhibits and tiangge to market their products. Some of the products offered on sale include strawberry jams, vegetables, organic fruits, fruit seedlings, ornamental plants, and even noodles made from squash and malunggay.

The Farmers and Fisherfolk Month is annually observed in the month of May pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 33 issued on May 21, 1989.
